Columns have added a timeless elegance to building for eons. Whether
holding up ancient Greek and Roman temples, state buildings, or simply your
dream home, columns are a significant addition to a space’s decor.
Given how easily they stand out, there are commonly asked questions in
the quest to getting the ideal interior column.
1.
How can you tell that a column is load bearing?
A load bearing column supports the upper section of a house and is
built into the home’s foundation. It cannot be removed from the space as that
would affect the safety and structure of the home.
Often when we move to a new home, we are excited to remodel it to suit
our individual taste. So how can we first verify that an interior or exterior
column is load-bearing before knocking it down?
● Check the building plan
If possible, check out the original house plan for the columns that are
marked as structural compared to ornamental columns. A decorative column may not be included in
the blueprint because it does not support any weight and may have actually been
added later.
● Check for any visible seams
Look out for seams that run lengthwise on opposite sides of the column
shaft. Sometimes, decorative half columns will be used to cover a structural
column. Even in this case, the beams will still be visible after the two halves
have come together.
● Consider the column’s material
The material composition of a column will speak a lot to its
load-bearing capacity. Fiberglass, hardwood, and stone are some materials used
to make structural columns. Lighter materials such as PVC and architectural
polyurethane generally are not capable of constructional support and will
therefore be decorative.
● Consult an expert
This will perhaps be the easiest and most conclusive alternative
especially if you were not able to access the house blueprints and are having
trouble finding the seams or the column material.
2.
What are adorning columns made of?
Decorative columns will be made from materials such as PVC,
polyethylene or dense polyurethane. These materials are favored because they
are resistant to extreme weather conditions and temperatures.
Dreamwall Decor interior columns are made from polyurethane that is
moisture-resistant and does not accommodate the growth of mold or mildew. It
does not warp or crack easily and will remain intact for a good, long while.
The columns will be insect-repellent and will be easy to manage, further
enhancing their durability.
3.
What shapes do columns come in?
Our interior columns come in round, half and flat designs. Besides
these, columns have transitioned from the traditional round shape to include
squared or rectangular columns. These squared columns are fast gaining
popularity because they offer a more diverse detail and a unique touch to the
space.
4.
Are faux columns easy to install?
Dreamwall Decor’s columns are designed to be simple even for a DIY’er
to install using simple tools. Armed with a good saw, drill and screws, putting
up the columns will be an easy task requiring minimal assistance.

or carpenter will do it for you without much difficulty.

5.
How long do decorative columns last?
Any item is as good as how it is made and how well it is managed. It is
an automatic assumption that load bearing columns will endure the test of time
because they are made from sturdy material such as stone or wood that is
naturally resistant to wear.
Can we say the same of decorative columns? All of our interior columns
are designed to be long-lasting and to retain their quality throughout that
time. They are resistant to warping, cracking, rotting, and insect damage. That
they are moisture-resistant means that will be durable even when installed in
places with high humidity such as the house exterior.
6.
Where can ornamental columns be installed?
Decorative columns are versatile and will rest magnificently both in
the interior and exterior of the home. They will offer an elegant transition
between open spaces such as the living room and dining section. They will also
frame the front porch or the driveway.
There are countless ways to dress the columns up to suit the rest of
the decor. Consider thin wood or brick layering for that outdoor feel. Give the
columns a more functional purpose by making them the surface for works of art
or photographs. Additionally, consider using them as a support for shelves or
wine cabinets.
Interior columns are a great addition to any home. As with all other
decor elements, they ought to be well thought out and well-placed. Are there more questions you have in mind for
interior and exterior columns? We would love to hear from you.
